Abstract

The universalism of the Islamic scholarly tradition is regarded as one of the primary instruments for addressing the challenges and opportunities that accompany an increasingly interconnected modernity. This research examines the evolution of Islamic thought from a period of disintegration toward integration and underlines the significance of the universalist approach in unifying diverse schools and perspectives within the Islamic world. The type of research employed in this study is library research, utilizing a paradigmatic philosophical-historical analysis approach. The research integrates three complementary approaches, namely philosophical, historical, and paradigmatic analysis. Within this framework, philosophical analysis explores concepts pertaining to universalism in Islam. The data for this research were gathered through a literature study involving the in-depth reading of numerous books, papers, articles, and classical texts relevant to past understandings of universalism. These data also serve the purpose of perspective enrichment. The findings of this study reveal the originality of tradition and modernity as the historical roots and the conceptual point of departure for the discussion of the universalism of the Islamic scholarly tradition. In addition, the findings also emphasize three methodological approaches for producing universalism within the scholarly tradition, namely ideological criticism, historical analysis, and structural analysis.
