Technology-Friendly Pesantren: Advancing Learning Effectiveness in the Contemporary Era

This study investigates the incorporation of digital technology within Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) and its effect on educational quality in the contemporary era, employing a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) of 30 peer-reviewed academic publications sourced from accredited journals, supplemented by content analysis. The review was guided by three research questions addressing the forms of technology integration in pesantren, the barriers impeding such integration, and the institutional strategies adopted in response. The findings reveal that technology enriches the educational experience in pesantren through diverse innovations, including e-learning platforms, the digitization of classical Islamic texts (kitab kuning), contemporary administrative management systems, and broadened Islamic outreach (da'wah), while also enabling productive partnerships with external institutions to strengthen infrastructural capacity. Of the 30 analyzed studies, the majority reported improvements in learning accessibility and administrative efficiency following technology adoption, though persistent obstacles nonetheless remain, among them insufficient technological resources, limited digital competency among educators and students, and apprehensions regarding the adverse influence of technology on students' moral development. In response, pesantren have adopted multifaceted strategies encompassing digital literacy programs, external institutional collaboration, the formulation of internal governance regulations, and a balanced, moderated approach to technology adoption that upholds Islamic principles. This study synthesizes evidence from the reviewed literature to provide practical guidance for policymakers and educators seeking to optimize technology use in pesantren, thereby empowering students to succeed in a globalized world while preserving their religious and cultural identity.
